Twitch, the popular video live streaming service, recently faced backlash on social media over its usage of the term “womxn.” In honor of Women’s History Month, the company pledged to begin using the phrase as a means of being more inclusive of its trans and non-binary streamers. “Join us in celebrating and supporting all the Womxn creating their own worlds, building their communities, and leading the way on Twitch,” said the now deleted Tweet.

LGBTQIA+ Twitter users didn’t take so kindly to the news, wondering whether terms like 'womxn' and 'folx' are performative and transphobic. While widely assumed to be gender neutral as opposed to “women,” the unconventional spelling of the word fundamentally contradicts that trans and non-binary women are women. 'Womxn' has no place in any inclusive feminist’s vocabulary.

What Is Trans Non Binary

This needs to be said:
'Womxn' is a term made by terfs. Trans women are women.
Folks is already gender neutral. Not everyone likes 'folx'. Respect peoples wishes.
Latine people have stated many times they don't like the term 'Latinx'.
Don't be performative. https://t.co/P5oWV2rdiV

“After hearing directly from you, including members of the LGBTQIA+ community on Twitch, we will be using the spelling ‘women’ moving forward,” Twitch later formally apologized. “We want to assure you that we have, and will continue to, work with the LGBTQIA+ community. We're still learning. Our good intentions don't always equate to positive impact, but we're committed to growing from these experiences, doing better, and ensuring we're inclusive to all.”

Still, social media users were left wondering how the streaming giant could bypass such offensive language. This incident is one among many in recent years where major companies have been criticized for perpetuating bigotry in one way or another. BBC News’ Ben Hunte reports that Twitch employees forewarned the company that its problematic usage of the term “womxn” wouldn’t be well received. This apparently didn’t deter overhead from releasing the campaign anyway. “Here’s an idea,” one person replied to Twitch’s apology thread. “Hire trans and non-binary people and then LISTEN to them.”

What Is A Non Binary Transition

The purpose of this fundraiser is to provide financial support for trans and non-binary folx in the Weaving Earth (WE) community. We aim to provide equitable access to the learning opportunities offered at the WE immersion, as well as relief from the burden of added financial pressures. Such pressures make it challenging to show up resourced enough to receive the gift of this dynamic learning container, and they disproportionately impact individuals who hold gender identities marginalized by the dominant system of cisheteropatriarchy. It is also important to acknowledge that these financial pressures come in addition to the profound sociopolitical inequity and violence imposed upon individuals and communities of marginalized gender identities within dominant society.
In an effort to interrupt “business as usual”, and to support a more equitable environment at Weaving Earth via the redistribution of resources, the cis-men of the Weaving Earth immersion have co-created this fundraiser. We have done so in solidarity with, and at the request of trans and nonbinary participants in the Immersion, and we aim to invite support particularly from individuals outside of the queer, trans, and non-binary community -- ie from those who hold the privileged identities of cisgender men and women. This request is in alignment with the redistribution of wealth and resources that is incumbent upon us to create a more just world, across differences of gender identity and access to wealth.
To meet the immediate financial needs of our queer, trans, and non-binary community members, we aim to raise $5000.
Achieving this goal will provide considerable relief, and will support these folx in showing up to their education at Weaving Earth better-resourced and better able to express their gifts and leadership -- elements which are deeply needed in the healing, co-liberation, and well-being of the whole in these troubled times. To that end, we humbly ask for your help in securing these funds. Please consider donating what you’re able, and please share this fundraiser broadly among those with the means and privilege to donate.

Any additional funds beyond our goal will be immediately re-distributed toward Weaving Earth’s Reparations Fund, which provides scholarships and financial support to folx of BIPOC identities within the WE community.
